  1. One of the greatest of all singers in the French language, Claire Croiza had an Irish-American father and an Italian mother. Her early career was mostly in opera, not only the standard mezzo repertory – Carmen, Charlotte, Dalila, Orpheus – but some important premieres and revivals too, including Monteverdi’s Poppea and Penelope.
